We remember by scars. Nothing so fragile as ribbons on fingers. Without agony the memory cannot anchor.

He knows more than most. Thanos did not need torture chambers when he could spin barbed wire rooms in any mind he chose.

Skin lacing of bitter tea. Fire. Stone.

Permanence. Seeds of bronze and gold in the palms of his hands.  In the pads of her fingers. Völundr was more metal than man, so they say.

So she said.

It stretches from both index fingers, reaching up his wrist and ending at the elbow. Following the path of the thick, taut white line beginning just under his palm.

Paths she shared with him.

He feels the vine around the bone. The tiniest hint of silver under his index nails. It curls around his metacarpals, wrist, stretching up to caress the hidden path on his arm.

Hidden, as hers were.

Pulling against the muscle beneath, holding the bone.

It is easy to forget, but she deserves—deserved—better.

He clenches his fists and hears the ring of his mother’s hammer.
