A/N: Written for this prompt comment_fic   Any, any, disintegration (though I completely failed to make it one sentence.) Part of this dialogue arrived when I was trying to sleep one night. This is a thing, apparently.

“Everything you say is an aside. Something whispered behind your hand. Why can’t you make a statement, give something of yourself?”

Loki can hear the darkness beyond the gate murmuring in his ear. He draws a finger down a curved a line on the wall as he stares into the void.

“If I make it real, concrete, then they can carve it away. I don’t know that there will be enough left of me in the rubble if I take the risk.”

“Are you a man crippled by fear, Loki? That is not who I see.”

Loki shakes as he holds onto the side of the arch. Laughter sparks out of him and he turns to stare at Heimdall. It has been…ages since he laughed.

“I don’t know if I can live up to such an ideal, gatekeeper, but I thank you for the laughter.”

Heimdall inclines his head and Loki begins to move past him. He feels a hand on his wrist and stills as Heimdall’s thumb traces the hidden scars.

“There are some who would embrace you without reservation, Loki, remember that you are worthy of their regard.”

Loki lets out a breath. Heimdall waits until Loki nods at him before he releases his wrist.

“Now, stop listening to the stars and go find someone to torment other than I.”

But Loki sees Heimdall smirk. He walks along the bifrost feeling lighter than when he arrived.
