Tasseomancy

Title: Tasseomancy
Author: ciaranbochna
Characters:
Sherlock, John
Disclaimer: I own neither the characters nor the world.
Length: 221words
Rating:  PG
Summary: "He never forgets what she needs."
Warnings: References to mental illness
A/N: Another 221B, written when I should be working on a longer fic.

He lets the last sip of tea slide down his throat, savouring the honey flavour of the full-leave Assam. The leaves in the bottom of his stained porcelain cup drift slightly in the few drops left. Just enough.

He turns the cup upside down on the saucer, the lilac pattern around the edges scratched and crackled. There is one crack along the left edge of the cup, he notices, as he turns it toward him (counter-clockwise), curled handle towards the left. The crack is stained brown faintly by the tannins. Once, twice, three times he spins the cup, the scrape against the saucer making his ears ring.

He lifts the cup and places it on the table, staring at the leaves on the saucer, grouped into three dark splotches by the spinning. He smells the bittersweet scent of tea, the blackberry honey he added to it, and the soft smell of the milk.

They are just leaves; nothing is revealed. They can’t tell him how to escape her, and he can’t leave without Harry. He never forgets what mummy needs.

John puts the teapot on the wooden tray. He arranges the milk, honey (handles facing left), and takes the tray upstairs. He counts each step as he goes, listening for raised voices, furniture rattling the walls, and worst of all—bargaining.

nice reveal of the inner angst that can accompany the care-taking elements of a sibling relationship. its not easy and being distracted by this type of moment; allowing ones self to get lost in details of minutia while looking for answers in tea leaves seems right. and true. and you did it as a 221B, kudos for that, too!

Thanks:) I meant it as their mother, but is certainly could be taken that way as well. Yes, sometimes focusing on the tiny details is easier than anything else.

thanks for being so gracious with my misread. am obviously on a harry kick tonight *smacks forehead* or perhaps in my case it was a matter of projection. john's issues with harry ringing too close to home and all. yeah. that said. lovely piece here. and the idea of john dealing with this first with his mum and then again and again with harry. or with them both. well, family. oh my.

took a quick look thru your lj, lots of intriguing looking pieces as well as those gorgeous pix you took. that fanmix series alone guarantees i will have to be back for more. :)

Oh I added one word after you commented (mummy), as I realized I wasn't being clear--so thank you for that. Yes, these issues resonate I completely agree.

As to the rest of my journal...*blushes* I hope you enjoy whatever else you find.

The Watson family history you've built through your stories is fascinating and compelling, and this is a crystal-perfect view of it.
