A/N: Another prompt from the  comment_fic archive - Avengers movieverse, Loki, lightning.

He is ten when he burns his hands so badly he spends a week beneath the soul forge, healing.  He was far too close to father when he used Mjolnir to call the lightning.

Loki doesn’t remember reaching for the lightning.  He only wanted to be near it. Something about the branches of fire reminded him of Yggdrasil.

He doesn’t speak—cannot, past the healing scars in his throat. Mother is beside him as he opens his eyes.

“There are days, Loki, when I’m not sure which of you is more bent on destruction—you, or Thor.”

Loki tries to toll away from her, but as he rips his hands from the invisible restraints and pushes on the bed his spine arcs and the room goes white, then black.

When he wakes again his arms are held fast to the bed.

“If you promise you won’t try that again I’ll remove the hold.” Mother’s voice is tight, and ragged.

Loki sees curls of her hair straying from the silver band on her head. Her face is very pale.

Loki swallows, and winces. Frigga touches his arm and the pain dims.

“You and I share a hunger for knowledge, son. In itself, this is a wonderful thing. If we are not careful that passion will drive us into the forge. But we can’t go. Do you understand?”

Her hands are on his cheeks, turning his head to look at her.

Loki doesn’t know if he can promise. But he nods. Mother’s eyes glitter in the torchlight.

The gesture isn’t enough. “I—will. Try.” It is hardly a breath, but he needs to say it aloud.

Frigga removes her hands and nods. She pulls up the sleeve of her dress and passes a hand over her forearm. A scar appears, extending from above her elbow to her wrist.

“My mother learned, just as you did, to keep me far from the fire. I could not resist touching the sword she was cooling. The shine of it called..." Frigga stops and the scar vanishes again.

"It is an endless struggle, but I think you can control it. You are stronger than you brother in some ways Loki. Forgetting will keep you alive.” She waits until he looks at her.

Loki loses track of time. Something writhes in his chest and he blinks and looks away. Torches blur in their eyes.

Mother tethers him to Asgard. Most of the time. Without her, his centre fails. He follows the lightning astray.
