Behind The Curtain

This particular fic is for Wombat, Caffienekitty and J. I hope you know why, and you don't throw things at me for dedicating it.

People view stage magicians and illusion two ways. First, you have enough of the child in you to clap your hands, asking for more, or two--you have a burning desire to see how it works, and once you find the answer you're still impressed, but a little proud for having figured it out.

I break things down for spells, give short technical explanations of magic for Molly and Murph, but I would rather be the kid in the audience, jaw on the floor, poking my father and saying "Hey! That guy was awesome, I want to do that."

You don't have that luxury when your dad is a magician. You help set up the illusion, and break it all down when the crowd files out.

"Put the book down grasshopper. I have something for you."

Molly looked up from her tiny desk in the corner of my workroom.

"Just the enlightened response I expect from you kid." I waved her over.

Molly gets out of her chair and leans expectantly against the wall next to me.

"No. For this you need to sit on the floor." I push my chair back and curl up cross-legged on the concrete.

"Ok. But if my legs fall off from lack of circulation I am telling Mouse."

"I live in holy fear of that day." I look up to the shaggy grey head leaning over the hole down to the workroom.

I pulled a pack of cards from inside my sweatshirt.

"You're going to teach me to gamble? Finally, something I can use."

I raised an eyebrow. "Oh, yes. And Michael would have no objection to that."

"He doesn't have to know. I-" Molly closed her mouth and pushed back a lock of plum-coloured hair.

The kid and hair. She could keep hair-dye companies in business single-handed with that mop of hers.

"Just watch grasshopper."

"Fine." She sighed.

I fanned out the cards on the floor with my right hand, then gathered them with the same--cascading them through the air into my left.

Her eyes widened. "You didn't drop any."

"I am full of talents kid. Now shut it."

Molly pursed her lips and kept watching.

I divided the deck into 3 sections with one hand and shuffled them again--fanning them out on the floor once more between us.

"Is this where I pick something?"

"No. Check your back pocket."

"Did you steal my house keys again? Because I am going to get--" Molly pulled her hand out of her pocket and stared.

It was a plastic card-holder with a braided copper/silver/steel bracelet in it.

"Uh, Harry. Is this a..."

"Shield bracelet. Yes. It doesn't take any focus from you to use it. You will start making your own soon. Just wanted you to have a little extra in the meantime." I collected the cards and slipped them back in my pocket.

"I--Thanks. But how did you get it into my pocket without me noticing?'

"I may just be a wizard kid, but my dad was a magician. Now get your stuff, we're done for today."

Molly looked up at me with light in her eyes.

"Can you teach me some of that too? I bet the brats would flip!"

"Oh, I bet that can be arranged." I smiled at her and looked up at Mouse--tongue lolling out, laughing at me.

I didn't forget.

I hope that he talks more about his father at some point too, but yes, I had to. I know you feel that, which is why it is in there:P

I am glad you liked it:) Apparently this week is about writing every two seconds, and this one wouldn't leave my brain alone last night--and I figured it was only fair to dedicate it to you guys, considering;)

Hi! *waves* I was recc'd to you by Caffienkitty because of your Dresden fic. I absolutely LOVE the books and the series. I just sort of picked this one at random to start with and it was great. You really have the charcterizations down. Mouse is such a cutie, I could see his big head hovering. LOL I'm sure I'll be enjoying more of your fic soon when it's not 3am and time for sleeping. Alright, take care!
