A/N: Vague prequel to Varnished Silver Read more... I apologise that most of my fics are related. I am working on a faerietale piece which is frustrating at the moment, and this was a welcome distraction.

He is sure that if he lifts the corner, he will find it. This will be so much more than parting the silver from mirrors. Destroying the depth in the glass is useless, which is why he removed all the mirrors in the flat save one. He can't see beneath, the silver doesn't show him what is true. The bathroom mirror remains to stay suspicion if John ever asks—and he hasn’t, yet.

He presses the gold tip of the fountain pen into his forearm again, and again. Leaving ink where each hair follicle breaks the skin. He takes another pen and leaves dots of moss green between the cerulean blue, takes another pen—oxblood red.  The fine point of the Montblanc is ideal for this exercise, and there is no bleed between the colours. Perfect.

Ed-Alleyne Johnson’s Oxford Suite pulls behind his eyes as he taints the first layer. He holds his arm up. It is enough. The whispers drift up from each drop of colour. Tilting his head he can almost hear the promise that this time…

If he removes the surface he can reclaim the original. Just pry under the striated flakes and the restoration can begin. He picks up the scalpel, closing his eyes to the reflection. Opens his eyes as merlot washes the fountain ink, but the promise blazes underneath and he will part the waste until he finds it.

It burns slightly, and the towel is a darker blue now. But the light sings to him and the colours taste so fine.

I'm very impressed with the language here; a difficult subject treated with grace and a pleasant edge of seaminess.

I appreciate that so much. I always fuss with every word, believe it or not. Thank you for reading.
